This week, we hosted the final evening of the “Creators Track” from the Department of Culture, Creation, and Production at Sapir Academic College.
The department offers an innovative degree program designed for artists and creators seeking to acquire skills as cultural managers, cultural entrepreneurs, and writers. It is tailored for students from art schools that do not grant academic degrees, providing a broad academic education in cultural studies, combined with professional specialization in managing a creative career within the community.
During the event, two students from Adama—Veronika Batchaldin and Maayan Berkowitz—who are completing their third year, presented their unique and moving research processes.
Scattered Longing in the Sand – Just Don’t Let It All Spill / Veronika Batchaldin
As a native of Jaffa, the beach has always been a place of refuge for me—a space where freedom and boundless nature met the bustling city life. After moving to Sderot, I found a connection to Zikim Beach, which became a new anchor in my life. The war turned it into an inaccessible space, and the longing for the sea and the freedom it represents remained as a persistent memory, which became the central theme of my research.
How can a natural and ephemeral material like sand serve as an expression of longing, freedom, and memory? How can sand be used to explore the tension between liberation and dissolution?
Lullaby – Disassembly and Reconstruction / Maayan Berkowitz
Lullabies, in their fundamental essence, facilitate the transition between wakefulness and sleep. My research focuses on lullabies through the lens of the challenges inherent in this passage—both in a concrete, daily sense and in a broader, symbolic way: the willingness to let go of thoughts and actions and exist in unity with the world, much like a young child who has not yet experienced separation.
This artistic process moves between past and present, words and sensations, consciousness and reality.
